Walter's career in TV journalism started with a petty act of hazing. When he gets assigned to cover a local animal shelter's adoption event, Walter is eager to go, if only to get out of the station for a few hours. With a camera operator chosen at random, he heads out to the shelter to get to work, and finds it every bit as awful and boring as he expected to. That is, until he spots a name on an unguarded adoption record. Suddenly, the event isn't so boring, as Walter and Billy manage to uncover a scandal in the course of an afternoon.

With his new-found ally, Walter manages to snipe another story soon after. A series of maulings have been taking place near a local lake, and Walter wants to know who - or what - is behind them. They borrow some equipment from the station, and head out after dark to see what they can find. What they come back with isn't the feral dog anyone was expecting. Something much bigger, and much more dangerous is lurking in the woods around Lacamas Lake.

There's only one problem. The story belongs to someone else, and she isn't happy about having it stolen.
